History

The Tradouw Guesthouse named after Tradouws Pass, was built around 1899 with its quaint sash windows and wooden floors.The house used to be the local Trading Store owned by a Mr Van Tonder providing provisions to the locals and farmers in Barrydale.The Anglo - Boer War broke out in 1899 and only ended in 1902 and as such, the house was built at a very important stage in the history of South Africa. The local school later used the house as a boarding house for young girls. The main shop is now the lounge and dining room of the guesthouse with an open stone fireplace where friends get together on cold winter nights enjoying good conversation and great wines from the region. The adjacent room which was once used as the local haberdashery is now "McCavities Bar", where guests can enjoy sundowners.

Country Guest House -Heaven in The Little Karoo on Route 62

The Tradouw Guest House is a little gem conveniently located just off the now famous, scenic Route 62 in the charming and beautiful town of Barrydale in the Little Karoo. Leon and Denis the owners for the past 15 years offer travellers Dinner bed and breakfast accommodation in an interesting historical house in a quiet part of the main street of the village. Three course home cooked evening meals or light informal meals can be enjoyed in our delightful Dining Room or in the Garden Café under the vines. Dinners are by prior arrangement and we also cater for vegetarians.

Guests will experience a relaxing, quiet, and peaceful stay in a rural country setting away from the noisy town centre yet within walking distance to the Bars, Restaurants, coffee shops, shops and The Barrydale Karoo Hotel where they have live bands on the weekends in their public bar or in The Belanti Cinema.

Your hosts  have created a nostalgic haven to stay in on your journey between Cape Town en route to Oudsthoon, Prince Albert, Knysna and further along the 'Garden Route' towards the Addo Elephant Park in the Eastern Cape and into the Great Karoo. The house offers a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere with beautiful gardens and awesome views over Barrydale and the Langeberg Mountains. The decor is eclectic yet colourful and interesting with fine pieces of old oregon and yellowood furniture. There are six small comfortable bedrooms set in the gardens at the back of the house away from the street. Each cosy room with a  queen, double or twin beds and shower en-suite facitities are available for overnight stops, weekend stays or longer breaks.

There is a lounge with open fire place and a quaint private pub  called "McCavities" with record player, piano and various board games to keep one entertained inside, outside under the vines, or on our cool front patio watching Barrydale life pass by. The Garden Café coffee shop is open to our resident guests serving great coffees, teas and refreshments in an idylic setting.

The guesthouse is gay friendly and small manageble pets are permitted through prior arrangement.
